The Lure of Toy Model Trains

The Lure of Toy Model Trains  , Toy Models, http://goarticles.com/article/The-Lure-of-Toy-Model-Trains/2330803/,

Article by Randal Perry

You might remember when you were a boy and loved Thomas the Train. You weren't the only one! There were many boys who fell in love with this talking train not just for the cartoon value, but because they were in love with these amazing machines. Later, as they grow up, they are still highly interested, and suddenly they see trains in a whole new light. They see its true power, and they see a way that they too can control it.

So what is it about trains that convinces or even coerces men to start playing with them? Many people see it as grown men playing with toys. It's possible that they enjoy running a small train and having power over it. Or perhaps because they want to know how a train operates. Perhaps they have memories of their Christmas train when they were a child. No matter what it is, you cannot refer to a model train as a toy any more. They are now machines, hobbies, and they are just as good for adults as they were for children.

When you think of a toy train, you are probably thinking of plastic trains that you buy for the bottom of the Christmas tree. Sure they are inexpensive, and they are a great way to introduce children to the art of model trains as a hobby. They are however, just toys. Now when they get into the actual hobby, they are playing with what is known as a locomotive. Locomotives are much more durable than toy trains and will last for a very long time. You don't have to 'push it' to get it started, and they are made of solid metal. Note that heavier trains are a better choice because they will be able to make better contact with the track, meaning that they will run longer and work better.

You can buy an electric train, but if you want to have a real touch of authenticity, then why not try a steam powered train? This is truly a lot of fun, and there are many different types available. There's nothing quite as fun as having a train with real steam. It adds that touch of realism that you might never have with an electric train. You truly have many different choices when it comes to model trains these days.

There aren't many who will grow up to operate a train like they have always dreamed of, and those who do probably do not appreciate the opportunity that they have been given. Accomplishing our dreams however does not have to come in the form of being an actual train operator. Model trains can provide us the realization of that dream any day of the week.

Model Trains - Toys, Models or Miniature Works of Art?

Model Trains - Toys, Models or Miniature Works of Art?  , Toy Models, http://goarticles.com/article/Model-Trains-Toys-Models-or-Miniature-Works-of-Art/1786753/,

Article by Nigel Braithwaite

The interest in model railways has seen a huge increase over the last few years, and especially in recent months. The recent increase in popularity, particularly in the UK, has been put down to the credit crunch forcing people to get involved in more 'home based' and 'family oriented' activities, rather than days or evenings out.

The quality of model trains has also improved enormously over the last few years. Having gone from tin plate, through basic plastic injection moulding, some of today's models are highly intricate works of model engineering, with impressive amounts of detailing. This attention to detail really captures the character and feel of the prototype locomotive, coach item of rolling stock being modelled.

Some of the more recent Hornby trains are particularly fine model trains with magnificent detail. No longer are these models just simple plastic mouldings, with all the detail cast into the main moulding, these newer models are intricately made up of many different parts. For example, the recently released Hornby Schools Class shows an entirely reworked model. The firebox, boiler and dome are all cast in metal, whilst the smokebox, running plate, cab, chimney and smoke deflectors are plastic.

The locomotive features plenty of accurate rivet detail and there are plenty of separately fitted items, such as brass safety valves, clack valves, nameplate, chimney and wire handrails.

However, perhaps the most stunning area of the model is the one that will most likely be hidden from view. That is the cab interior and boiler backhead. The quality of the cab instruments, control levers and wheels is amazing. The calibrations on the gauges are legible under a magnifying glass, and the water gauge glasses, regulator, reverser and atomiser are miniature works of art.

So the question is will models of this quality be run on layouts by young children, or are these models now intended for collectors to display proudly? Certainly these new, highly detailed models do look magnificent on display but also look magnificent on a highly detailed layout.

Hornby have obviously thought of this as they often produce Limited Edition models, clearly aimed at the collector. In 2008 they produce the British Rail 4-6-2 West Country Class 'Bude'. This was released to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the formation of British Railways. 2008 limited edition models were produced, each with a numbered certificate of authentication. This particular locomotive was chosen as it took part in the locomotive trials in 1948, where different pairings of locomotive and tender were tested to see how they performed outside their normal regions.

With the advent of Digital Control, (DCC) locomotives now feature working lights that stay on and also sound. These locomotives are obviously meant to be worked on layouts to add extra dimensions to the operation of the layout, and also as an added experience for the observers.

In contrast to this, Hornby also have a range of models aimed at the younger enthusiast known as the RailRoad range. These models are devoid of the easily damaged detail parts that adorn the new super detailed models. The Hornby RailRoad range also offers a simple and cost effective way of getting into the hobby.

So summing up. Are model trains toys, models or miniature works of art? The quality of some of the recent models could well be classed as works of art. Many people still believe to this day that steam locomotives were works of art and these new models faithfully reproduce the character of the originals. However, how many children still get delight from operating their first train set? These are the ones that go on to become enthusiasts and collectors as they grow older.

I suppose the answer is Yes to all three!

Why boys love toy model trains?

Why boys love toy model trains?  , Toy Models, http://goarticles.com/article/Why-boys-love-toy-model-trains/2071048/,

Article by Philip Redfearn

When it comes to hobbies for boys, nothing can beat toy model trains. This is a hobby and tradition than goes back decades. These days you will find men from all age groups collecting and playing with model train sets.

Model trains have captivated boys and men for decades simply because it brings together so many things that are exiting and interesting for males of all ages, especially boys. It really is a great hobby and you can spend countless hours creating, planning and playing with model trains.

It is also because there is more involved than simply watching trains go round the track. You get to create the model landscapes, add scenery, re-design your layout, build bigger layouts and add characters to the model also.

It is really another virtual world that can be created and it has been going on well before the invention of video games. This is another great point to note. Many model train enthusiasts enjoy it because it offers so much more than video games cannot offer.

For example, you can actually touch the trains and the scenery that you create. Although everything is in a model environment, there is still something real and tangible about a model train environment.

There is a great sense of achievement that comes with a well functioning railway layout. The sounds and the feelings that come from building a model railway layout cannot be experienced any other way.

There is also something that many boys learn by being involved in the model train hobby. They learn about scales, gauges, trains, locomotives, laying track and planning working layouts.

It is also a hobby that allows for growth. When boys are small they usually have a small scale train set, but as they age they like to move to a larger scale. Again, this brings a more realistic element into play.

By experiencing and buying from different model manufacturers, hobbyists get to explore different options and find which they really enjoy most. There are some scales that allow for more innovation and experimentation.

Another major reason that boys enjoy model trains is that it gives them a sense of escapism and it's very exiting. Anyone can start will just a few pieces of track and a train and then build from there. Even with such a small initial setup, you can use your imagination to see what you want to create in the future.

With planning, you are then able to bring the vision into reality and create something totally unique, based on your own ideas. As such, this gives boys the power to be a creator and really build something that they have full ownership over.

This is also the reason that model trains remain popular with men as they grow up. It gives them that ability to escape into another world where they are in control and can create the landscape and rail track based on their own unique imagination.

There are many reasons that boys love toy model trains, and from small beginnings it can be a lifelong hobby.

Stir Your Imagination With Toy Model Trains

Stir Your Imagination With Toy Model Trains  , Toy Models, http://goarticles.com/article/Stir-Your-Imagination-With-Toy-Model-Trains/2040027/,

Article by Leonard Wilson

During birthdays or occasions like Christmas, when you pick out a present you would always take into consideration to whom you'll give the present to. You would consider their age, likes and dislikes and other factors like if they have a favorite animal or they informed you that they would rather have cash instead. To give someone a toy model train, that child must be special.

Trains are not your typical toys. They are not as popular among kids unlike planes, cars or boats. A toy model train is something to cherish and keep. To plant the seed of interest, simple toy trains can be introduced to the child. A simple wooden or plastic train that can be pulled by a string is a good start. After observing how they liked playing with them, you can then get trains that can run on batteries. For older kids, introducing them to electric train sets will surely pique their interest. Bringing them to train shows or exhibits will surely blow their imagination away.

Trains need floor room to roam. As the saying goes, location is everything. Some would feel that the best place to put a train set is in the bedroom. Suggested areas are either on the bedside table, on a wide cabinet, on the bedroom floor or even up in the ceiling where the child can always look at it before he sleeps. Some would rather have it on the living room where everybody else can enjoy the train as it runs past the sofa or the divider.

Toy model trains are a joy to have. They are fun to set up and pleasant to watch. This also could be a chance for a child to learn about responsibility and how to handle things with care. Some train models are simple to maintain while others will require guidance and assistance from a parent. This is the perfect opportunity to bond with your children and have wonderful learning experience with them

Children and Model Trains - How to Get Them Interested and Keep Them Interested in Toy Model Trains

Children and Model Trains - How to Get Them Interested and Keep Them Interested in Toy Model Trains  , Toy Models, http://goarticles.com/article/Children-and-Model-Trains-How-to-Get-Them-Interested-and-Keep-Them-Interested-in-Toy-Model-Trains/2238739/,

Article by Herny Michael

Many of us have had toy model trains as children. We loved watching them go around the track (usually a simple circle or oval) and listening to the chug chug of the locomotive. But I would be willing to bet that most of us abandoned those trains rather quickly because they were a little boring. Model train enthusiasts today, know that model railroading can be anything but boring. There are so many aspects to keep your attention that a lifetime is not enough to thoroughly explore them all. So how do you keep children interested? Read on for some ideas.

There are many aspects to model trains that children love. There are also many aspects of the hobby that are educational. The two things do not need to be mutually exclusive. If you want a child to be interested in things, you need to introduce them to things that interest them, not you. For example, you may be fascinated by the history of railroading in general and love to learn about it to ensure your layouts are as accurate as possible. Children generally are not interested in history, so you first need to get them interested in something else, and then parlay that interest into more aspects of the hobby until eventually, they will be begging you to help them learn about the history too.

So what interests children? One thing is stuff that moves, especially for younger children. They love to watch the trains go around and listen to the sounds they make. Watching will last only so long though, and they will want to get involved. Let them push the button to start the locomotive. Teach them to right a train that has fallen off the track. Help them learn to troubleshoot a train that stops moving. Point out details in the scenery that may interest them like a playground that you have modeled or trucks that are in place to move the goods brought in by your railroad. Let them paint some of your buildings to give them some ownership of your layout. Teach them that toy model trains and real model trains are not the same, and they need to respect that.

There are some things that children will need to be older to help with, like the controls, wiring, and electrical connections. Make sure you teach them how to safely operate your trains and set down rules that they cannot touch those items if you are not around. Also, be prepared for some broken items. Children are just that way, they break things. It is a great way to learn. Be patient and let them learn those lessons without getting upset.

Toy model trains are a great introduction to model railroading for children, but to make sure it is not the end of their interest, get them involved in the hobby and keep them interested. Model railroading is a great pastime for children and adults to enjoy together. It is a rewarding way to connect with your children or grandchildren. Try it, and you may just have a companion in your hobby forever.

Toy Model Trains After WWII

Toy Model Trains After WWII  , Toy Models, http://goarticles.com/article/Toy-Model-Trains-After-WWII/3346814/,

Article by Charlotte Mathes

Students of US history know that following World War II, the economy was poised to take off. Battles had not been fought on our shores and men were returning home ready to start careers and families. To model life like trains after the troop carriers was a natural, and the children loved them. The manufacturers cranked out electric train sets right and left. To entice the children with toy model trains, manufacturers and designers added more features, live steam and action cars. This was the time the HO scale trains made their successful move for market share.

When production restarted in Europe the HO scale won out with the exception of Britain where the OO continued to reign. New players arose in Europe: Fleishman in Germany, Rovex-Triang in England and Rivarossi in Italy. Each grew to have a large place in the European market and the new ranges used 12v DC two rail standards from the beginning.

In the 1950s, the toy train was recognized as a major toy. They were manufactured in the tens of thousands. While the toy gained prominence the real railways were slowly sinking in popularity with the advance of the plane and auto. The fifties became a transitional time for the toy train business. The imagination and desires of children was changing and the whole market was shrinking. The WWII baby boom was growing up and they were fewer children to replace them. As in any market correction, companies are closed and brands lost.

The sixties were dismal. For the companies that survived the shrinking market, there were two lessons learned. One was the realization that toy trains were actually sold to adults, the other, the cost of production. For the scale modeler the trains were made more accurate and detailed. For the collector the trains became objects in their own right to be collected.

To contain cost, a cheapening of the product was needed. New sources for production were found in Hong Kong, China and Eastern Europe. Something worked for in Britain new manufacturers arose in the 1970 and established a sizeable market. New gauges have emerged, the N and Z for small scales and the G for the large scale group. In the US where "Bigger is better" the large scales have a strong market, even the old toy three rail gauge O standards.

Germany settled on two major two makers, so the toy train remains with a wider range than ever before. The model train industry of today has clearly made items for the adult enthusiast modeler, the collector and thankfully still for children.

Why to Buy Toy Model Cars in Diecast

Why to Buy Toy Model Cars in Diecast  , Toy Models, http://goarticles.com/article/Why-to-Buy-Toy-Model-Cars-in-Diecast/2789643/,

Article by Julie Ann Amos

If you're buying toy model cars for the car loving tyke in your family, let us make a humble recommendation: Go with diecast car models.

Simply put, they just plain last longer. They're more durable, and the dog won't want to chew on it!

How many times have you bought plastic toy model cars for your kid, and the darn things are broken less than a week after Christmas? Even one time is too often. The plastic they use to make toy cars tends to be kind of cheap and brittle, easily broken.

The thing is, plastic is cheaper and easier when it comes to mass production, so more and more, it's becoming the choice material to create toy model cars with. Unfortunately, they don't last as long, they're not quite as fun to play with, they don't look as good... but, the bottom dollar is preserved. Plastic toy cars are more profitable to produce.

If you were a gearhead as a kid, you probably still have some of your die cast model cars from your childhood. Maybe you've passed them on to your own kids, or even your grandkids. How many plastic toy cars get passed on from generation to generation? Not many.

Besides which, the fact remains that diecast toy cars are usually much cooler.

Hot Wheels diecast, for example. If you remember playing with Hot Wheels growing up, you remember how cool those cars were. Some of those 1:64 scale diecast toys served as surprisingly accurate replicas of real cars, while others were really neat little concept cars that were simply too crazy to ever be put into production, or indeed, even presented as a concept car to a major car design firm.

But if you're talking about making toy cars, the sky is the limit, so we've seen all sorts of cool Hot Wheels shaped like dragons, scorpions and snakes, cars with machine guns and missile launchers mounted on them, and cars with way more rear wheels than any compact sports car could ever possibly need for any reason. And they're all diecast, because Hot Wheels has it together and they know that diecast toy cars last longer, and more importantly, that they're more fun to play with. They roll smoother, they look cooler and they just plain make for better toys, overall.

In other words, a diecast toy car is the sort of thing you can pass on to the next generation, where a plastic toy car is the sort of thing you can usually pass on to the trash can about a week after you've opened it.

How Will You Collect Toy Model Trains?

How Will You Collect Toy Model Trains?  , Toy Models, http://goarticles.com/article/How-Will-You-Collect-Toy-Model-Trains/2005037/,

Article by Blake Blair

Many people collect toy model trains and for a variety of reasons. Some people build them, much like some people build model cars. Other people just love the way that they look and the feeling they get when they find that perfect toy model train set. No matter the reason there is no denying that there has long been a demand for toy model trains and their will likely to continue to be a demand for many years to come.

While toy model trains have been around since the first real train was set on its tracks, it wasn't until many years later that model trains were viewed as a hobby or as a collectibles. There is an importance to model trains that some people do not recognize (they are obviously not collectors), however it exists none the less. Toy model trains offer a look into American history as many trains mimic the trains of the time. Replicas offer collectors the opportunity to own a piece of history as well as have something that they love at the same time.

As children many boys and girls received toy model trains as gifts for birthdays and Christmas gifts. As they grew into adults many of these same children took with them the sense of excitement and fun that owning a toy model train brought. As adults these individuals look at toy train sets and still feel that same sense of excitement and awe and want to own the item that brought to them that feeling. This is how many train collections begin. Other people collect for other reasons, perhaps they only collect trains from a specific era because they collect all things from that era, and others only want famous trains like the Orient Express, the first Bullet Train, the Flying Scotsman and more. These are event collectors.

No matter what your reason is for wanting toy model trains, you are fortunate to live in a time where collecting is encouraged and thus it is easy to find various collections. You may be able to find what you want at auction, on eBay, or from private collectors around the world. Collecting trains has become almost an art form and many people are anxious to get their own collections as well.

Discover Some History With Toy Model Trains

Discover Some History With Toy Model Trains  , Toy Models, http://goarticles.com/article/Discover-Some-History-With-Toy-Model-Trains/2052144/,

Article by Blake Blair

If you have ever had a toy mode train growing up then you can understand why there is still a great demand for toy model trains. They offer so many things to individuals everywhere. For many adults there is a sense of nostalgia that goes along with seeing and playing with a toy model train. For children there is that wonder as something they helped to put together can follow a track around. They hold their breaths and squeal when the train is derailed and even sometimes create this 'emergency' on purpose.

No matter who you are or how old you are, you probably have some kind of love for toy model trains. These trains are steeped in history and have provided children with an outlet for imaginative fun since the late 1800's when toy trains first became prevalent. Times have changed however and those push and pull around trains are a think of the past (other than being highly collectible) and toy trains today are high tech and offer power as well as sleek design.

There is a lot of appeal with collectors when it comes to toy model trains. Men and women who collect toy trains usually do so in order to display the trains in their homes or in museums. Toy trains offer a look into a world that cannot be remembered but does not want to be forgotten. Before real trains came along, the US was a scattered country and people from one town to another only saw each other every few months, if that. The train system made the world smaller and allowed cities and towns to become connected, bringing supplies, medicine, and even workers to areas that they couldn't before. Toy model trains bring back that sense of history to those who view them, especially replica trains.

The ownership of toy model trains has made many a boy and girl smile in delight. With all of the options that are available today from bullet trains to trains reminiscent of the 1900s there is an appeal there than cannot be denied. No matter what the reason is for owning a toy model train there is no denying that having one can make a person immensely happy.

The Excitement of Toy Model Trains

The Excitement of Toy Model Trains  , Toy Models, http://goarticles.com/article/The-Excitement-of-Toy-Model-Trains/2101261/,

Article by Mike Foster

The Thomas series of trains inspired lots of little kids and even some adults to become fascinated by the majestic features of toy model trains to the point of near obsession. Little kids view the animated trains on the television and do not realize exactly what is drawing them to the machines. Soon, though, kids become adults and they can then understand that man operating such a mighty form of transportation is what attracted them to the trains in the first place.

So, why do grown men like to dally with toy model trains? Perhaps it could be that they are captivated by being in command of a machine that is so strong even when it is only 1/87 of the real thing. Or perhaps they like to study how the energy coursing through the tracks makes the engines go. Or it could be that the restricted movement of the machines creates order in their lives. It could even be simply that they are nostalgic for childhood holidays when toy model trains circled a Christmas tree, and playing with toy trains brings back those good memories. However, no matter what the reason is for playing with them, model trains are not toy trains. Indeed model trains are sophisticated contraptions with an emphasis on realism that are designed for adult train enthusiasts.

Typically, toy model trains are made of plastic and can be found in any discount store during the holidays. However, toy trains are not very durable and are cheap enough to bring children into the activity. Children grow and turn into adults. Similarly, toy trains grow and turn into relatively sophisticated model railroad sets, with locomotives and rolling stock. The construction of locomotives and stock makes them durable. Model trains are far superior to the poorly made toy model trains that you can gently nudge to make them go. The locomotive's wheels will generate a superior connection with the rails so as to conduct the electricity more efficiently to make the train run better. Such components really make model train enthusiasts happy. In addition, locomotives employ more powerful engines. More powerful engines translate to more towing capacity. Superior trains are also constructed of metal instead of the typical plastic of toys. A train's weight is a significant factor in determining how well it runs. If the locomotive is heavy, it will have a superior connection with the rails and result in better operation.

And if the train operator is more enthralled with steam than with electricity, the model train manufacturers have steam engines to satisfy this passion as well. A variety of well-made steam model trains does exist, however, in order to make them more realistic; one with actual steam puffing out the stack is the best way to go.

Not many kids fulfill their dreams of becoming train engineers when they achieve adulthood. And many real train engineers probably do not view their occupation as a dream come true, but instead, as a way to earn money. However, no one has to actually become an engineer in order to realize a dream. Through the model train past-time, anyone can be a locomotive engineer and satisfy his desire.

10 Interesting Facts About Toy Model Trains

10 Interesting Facts About Toy Model Trains  , Toy Models, http://goarticles.com/article/10-Interesting-Facts-About-Toy-Model-Trains/2147399/,

Article by David Blackburn

There are many different interesting facts about toy model trains. The more you get into the hobby of model railroading, the more you will find out. Those just getting started will be interested by some of the things experienced railroaders have come to know over the years. Below you will find a list of ten interesting facts about model trains.

(1) The Truth About G Scale. Many people have come to accept G scale coming from the word garden. G scale actually comes from the term Gros which is a German word for big or large. The reason why so many people call them garden trains is because they are used as outside trains. Layouts include plants and grass from the gardens people have in their homes.

(2) History of Model Trains. Toy model trains started out as novelty toys for children. These toys followed shortly after trains were used as modes of transportation and delivery. These toys did not have very much detail. As time went on, adults became interested in the model trains and an entire industry was born.

(3) High Society Model Trains. In the Victorian era, there were many different social clubs, which met to talk about model trains. It was considered highly exclusive to have your own model train set with an elaborate layout. The prices of the trains put them out of the hands of common people making it trendy to own them.

(4) World War One. Before World War 1, the majority of toy model trains were made in Germany. This became a problem in a time when Germany became the enemy of the world and all production was halted. This allowed many companies like Lionel to become the powerhouses in model trains they are today.

(5) Track Materials. The material used to make the tracks have changed over the years. One of the most popular materials has been brass. This has given way to aluminum and stainless steel as options many people prefer. One of the most popular materials to use is a nickel alloy blend, which costs less while still being light and conductive.

(6) Weathering For Detail. A very big design feature many train modelers include in their layouts is weathering. This will give the train and the layout the appearance of realism most people are looking for. By adding stains, or wear, the entire design will appear as if it has been affected by the conditions.

(7) Why N Scale is Cheaper. The N scale is one of the most popular scales of toy model trains. The popularity along with the size makes it very easy to mark down. Using less materials and being easier to add details also play important roles in allowing manufacturers to reduce the cost of the finished product.

(8) The Future of Model Trains. Model trains have undergone many changes over the years from being able to only run one train to running several. It used to take a highly skilled conductor to manage multiple trains. Now with computers, it is easy to manage several trains on the same track at once.

(9) Trains You Can Ride on. The 1:8 ratio model train is not something everyone has space for. It has become popular for those who have the money in order to have fun with their children, or simply to have a model that is easier to work on. Being able to operate the model with coal or propane allows you to have the live steam most modelers prefer.

(10) Train Clubs. No matter what scale train you own, there is probably a club you can join of others who prefer the same scale. These clubs are recommended for anyone regardless of skill level. They are great places to show off and get new ideas from.

There is much more information available about toy model trains. You are sure to discover something you will want to pass along, as you get more familiar with the hobby itself.

The Joys of Toy Model Trains  , Toy Models, http://goarticles.com/article/The-Joys-of-Toy-Model-Trains/2025375/,
Article by Mike Youlo
Whether you are looking for a hobby to enjoy or you are in a place where you want a hobby that you can share with the people who love you, you will find that it is time for you to look into toy model trains. Building and running toy model trains is something that many people have started looking at with interest, and why not? This hobby has a lot to offer, and solitary people can enjoy it or it can be enjoyed as a joint venture between family and friends. Take a moment to learn more about it and all the advantages that you might be looking at.

Do you remember looking at the toy model trains that you might have been given as a child? Even when they were made of plastic, even when they were not made to go over any terrain more complicated than a flat carpet, there was still a real sense of joy when you saw them running. Think about how much more interesting and gorgeous they would be if they had some real weight behind them and if they were in a place where you could take them across landscapes that would so much more intricate and so much more elaborate.
Toy model trains, which are often called locomotives can be beautiful works of art in their own right. These trains are extremely detailed and you will find that they can accurately represent historical or contemporary trains down to the smallest detail. You can purchase them from kits where they arrive ready to run right out of the box, or you will find that you are in a great place to put them together from parts or to paint and detail them yourself. This is something that can show you exactly how different working with a locomotive is from working with simple toy model trains that are designed for children.

Article by Leonard Wilson
Of the many hobbies in the world that could stir up one's fascination and awe are the toy model trains. It never stops to wake the sleeping child within all of us. It is not something born out of ordinary habit but an experience nourished from childhood to adulthood. The very first toy model train received by a child on Christmas Eve, lighted a flame of attraction and anticipation in a boy's inquisitive mind. The birthing of a toy model train hobbyist invisibly unfolds. The unforgettable experience is nurtured through manhood and pass on to the next generation, as did one father to a son.
Basically, the toy model train feeds on a child's wildest dream and offers a lot of surprises stirring the boy with anticipation and urges him to crave and create the desired fantasy. Guided by their parents, the boy is led to a particular scenario memorable and has affected their lives. The informative instructions handed down to the child eventually lead to hunger for technical knowledge and meet the demands of his dream.
There are many varieties of toy model trains collections, cars, rolling stocks, layouts and add-ons available in the market. It is always advisable to acquire the beginners' kit or the "Ready to run" set. The very popular model trains having the largest array of locomotives, cars, and accessories are the HO scale and the O scale. The other toy model trains are the G scale, the N scale, and the Z scale. Though all model trains attract children, the HO and O scales are the most suitable. To help both parents and child come to a decision in choosing the scale, a thorough technical knowledge of toy model trains is in order. Often interchangeably mixed up are the terms gauge and scale. Technically both terms have been confusing many hobbyist and led to misuse of the two model trains' gauges and scales.
The scale refers to the size of the toy model train that runs a specified gauge track. Here are the common scales; G scale which is 1:25, the N scale which is 1:60, the O scale 1/48th of its actual size, the HO scale which is 1:87 and the Z scale is 1:220 is the smallest. The O scale uses the O gauge track 1.25 inches (31mm) space distance between running rails. The standard O scale is 1:48 in proportion which is an inch of the model's surface is equal to 48 inches of the prototype. The 1.25 inch distance between rails is the standard gauge track. It was the first toy model train gauge pre World War I and up to the 1930s.
The toy model trains offers a wide selections of layouts, building and structures with details and add-ons depicting certain eras of interest or even designs to suit your own taste. Far more important is to bear in mind what creates the surprises and the feeling of anticipation in a kid's mind. Children love a layout with tunnels and railway lines with flashing crossing signals and crossing gates. They are excited with freight trains with log dumpers, lighted caboose and passenger cars. In addition, the sound of a steam locomotive whistling through a tunnel with smoke fuming out of its stack and watching them ogling with awe and wonder, full of fascination just bring out the child in us.

Toy Model Trains - Fun for All Ages

Toy Model Trains - Fun for All Ages  , Toy Models, http://goarticles.com/article/Toy-Model-Trains-Fun-for-All-Ages/2633510/,
Article by C.W. Crawford
When you first see the term "toy model trains" somewhere, you might do a double-take. Which is it - toy trains or model trains? What's the difference? Is there a difference?
Some people reasonably take the position that miniature trains are, by definition, toys. No matter how old (and serious) you are, you play with them. Toys are something you play with.
For most people, there is no difference. Both terms refer to replicas of trains - locomotives and rolling stock - that children and grownups can enjoy.
But for those who are involved in the hobby, there is a huge difference.
Toy trains are sold to and for children - traditionally at Christmastime. Typical electric train sets are basic and uncomplicated. They are durable and can be played with for years. Precision and detail aren't so important. There are many choices on the market - even Lego versions that come complete with locomotives, cars, and power sources. With their relatively low prices, toy trains are a great way for kids to be introduced to model railroading.
Model trains, by contrast, are for enthusiasts who are devoted to authenticity and detail. Many are interested in expanding their collections into huge, often complex, layouts. Some even build their own trains from scratch, paying scrupulous attention to detail. For the dedicated railroader, model trains are an art form and / or a way to connect with history.
The first toy trains appeared on the scene in Europe and North America in the 19th century. They were push-toys made of wood or cast iron. Some were wind-up clockwork trains; others could be powered with small steam engines.
Beginning around 1901, the American company Lionel began to popularize electric trains as toys for children. The company's marketing plan was based on finding ways to encourage children to play with their trains instead of just watching them go. To do this, the company created accessories that contributed to the playtime experience, such as signal lights, coal loaders, logging cars, and more.
Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends appeared on the scene in the 1980s. The TV series, which was based on a series of children's books from the 1940s, was about a small train and its adventures. The series was successful in getting many children interested in owning their own toy trains. Today there's even a Lego build-your-own version of Thomas - complete with track and a power source.
There are also trains with working steam engines. To the true model railroader there's nothing more exciting then seeing these trains in action - with realistic steam filling the miniature landscape of a model train layout.
Many of today's model train enthusiasts will tell you that they first entered the hobby one Christmas morning long ago, when that first Lionel or American Flyer train set appeared under the tree. That toy grew into a lifelong passion and a truly satisfying pastime.
